Granite Monument Design Decision #2 - Base Size and Shape

The base essentially raises the die off the ground and provides a solid and level surface for the die. Although is is perfectly acceptable to place a die directly on the ground without a base, the die must be sized properly so that grass, plants, flowers, and any shrubs you plant do not block the monument lettering.

Things to Consider when sizing a base:

• How high does the cemetery let the grass grow before they mow?

• Will I be planting flowers or shrubs that may hide the monument if the base is not high enough?

• Will the base compliment the monument size I have selected?

• Is my lot size too large for the base I sized?

• Are there any other size options that I might want to consider?

• Do I want a unique base with special accents?

• Does the color of the base need to match the color of the monument?

• Do I even need a base for the monument I have selected?

• Do specific types of plants or grasses discolor the base or can I plant anything I want?

Base Width

The width of a base is generally 6” longer than the die width. This allows for three inches of base extending out on either side of the die. This standard sizing can be modified depending on accents such as a planter.

Base Height

Bases are typically 6” in height but 8” and 10” bases are also available. The height of the base should be paired with the die's aspect ratio to ensure a clean design.

Base Depth

The depth of the base is normally 4” larger than the depth of the die. This allows for two inches of base extending out on the front and back of the die.
