Granite Monument Design Decision #7 - Monument Lettering
The last step in designing a monument is determining what you would like lettered on the
monument. Generally, a family name is lettered on the front of the monument while names and
birth/death dates are lettered on the back. You can also include an epitaph or favorite saying.
Lettering can be sandblasted directly on the polished finish or surrounded by a panel.
Panels
Panels create a visual border around text on a monument. Typically, a panel consists of removing
the polish and sandblasting either a single or double line around the family name. The panel
helps draw attention to the text and to create contrast between the sandblasted letter and the
monument. In addition to a rectangular panel, scroll, ribbon, and book shaped panels are also popular.
Letter Styles
Letters are generally sandblasted directly into the monument creating the proper depth and
contrast. Other less common letter styles include outlined frosted, double outline sandblasted, and
raised letters.
Fonts
Fonts can vary widely; however, the standard monument font is the Roman font type. With few
exceptions, all lettering is upper case. It is important to select a font where the upper case
letters are sufficiently wide enough to properly sandblast. Star Granite Company has an extensive
list of fonts to choose from. Discuss your font preference with one of our granite consultants and
we will ensure that the font can be sandblasted.
Examples
The following monuments show the various looks you can achieve with panels and lettering styles.
Once again, this is a very small subset of the available combinations of fonts and panel selections.
